An Introduction to the Semantic Web and its Potential Use in the Space Industry

Rebecca Graham, Carissa Bryce Christensen, Rachael Graham, Paul Guthrie, Jason W. Hay · 2010

This paper introduces the Semantic Web, explains how it works, and provides examples of specific benefits that the space industry could realize by adopting Semantic Web-based data management strategies. This paper presents the applicability of Semantic Web technologies to the space industry using the example of MATCH (Mapping Applicable Technologies to Exploration CHallenges), an ongoing data management project for NASA, in which the authors have been involved for several years. This paper uses the example of MATCH to illustrate a current approach to solving data management challenges facing the space industry and to show how this approach would be different if Semantic Web-based solutions were employed.
