Performance of a fibre optic link for GSM radio signal transmission
D. Galbraith · 1997
This paper presents a GSM-specific assessment of the performance of a radio-on-fibre link between a remote antenna unit and GSM base station. A comprehensive model of the GSM physical layer is simulated from the initial speech and channel encoding in the mobile station through to transmission into the air. The received RF is then subcarrier-multiplexed onto a laser diode and transmitted through optical fibre to a photodetector. By complete simulation of the physical layer (Layer 1) of the GSM Digital Cellular Standard, with the insertion of an accurate fibre optic link model, the BER performance and input dynamic range for the Speech, Data and Control Channels is assessed and evaluated in the presence of multipath, co- and adjacent-channel interference. The model is compared with a real-life system to confirm performance predictions. (6 pages)
