Robust Design Consideration in the Multi-Disciplinary Optimization of a Flying Wing UAV Design

Minghang Liu, Yu Chang Hu · 52nd Aerospace Sciences Meeting · 2014

It is really critical to design a reliable UAV (high performance and low sensitivity). Consequently, robust design should be incorporated into the conceptual design and optimization procedure to indicate design choices that are both balanced in performance and resistant to possible losses due to uncertainties. In this paper the improved Concurrent Subspace Optimization based on Response Surface (RSCSSO) combining with Inexpensive Monte Carlo (IMC) is proposed as a tool to tackle a UAV robust design optimization task. A single object optimization was conducted based on improved RSCSSO. The proposed IMC-RSCSSO algorithm was applied and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) was used to tackle the uncertainty in twist and sweep angle. After the results are analyzed and compared with the single optimization results, robust consideration is proved to be useful for UAV conceptual design.
