Modern International Communication Networks for the Earth Observing System (EOS) Missions

Andrew Germain · SpaceOps 2008 Conference · 2008

A decade ago, the Internet was in a much more primitive state than it is today, especially regarding international connectivity. Thus it was of only minor value to the Space Operations community. However, major progress has been made in the intervening years, and it is now worth another look. Today’s internet offers very high performance, low packet loss, and high availability through redundant equipment and circuits. Most countries which conduct Space Operations are now connected by very high speed (typically 10 Gbps) “research” networks that are generally available to the space research community at a very reasonable cost.
