Handover model and applications to LEO systems dimensioning

F. Dosiere, Gérard Maral, Jean Pierre Boutes · 15th International Communicatons Satellite Systems Conference and Exhibit · 1994

An analytical model is proposed which allows rapid calculation of the probability of handover fail and of call blocking, given a traffic pattern and the configuration of a low earth orbit satellite constellation. This model, when applied to several types of constellations and a European scenario, given a requested quality of service, permits a comparison between systems. It is shown that a Walker type constellation with 40 satellites distributed on 5 planes, at 55' inclination, is the one demanding the smallest satellite capacity. It is also shown that the required capacity always increases when a multibeam satellite is used instead of a single beam one.
