Towards an architectural design pattern for automotive telematics systems

Gennaro Costagliola · 2004

The development of current automotive telematics systems is a challenging task because such systems are characterized by a variety of advanced services. Thus, there is the need for defining flexible and modular architectures able to ensure parallel development of components, maintainability, extensibility, testability, platform independence, and interface customization. We propose a software architecture based on a suitable design pattern which captures the essential aspects and the specific characteristics of telematics systems. Such a proposal has been conceived as an extension of the model-view-controller design pattern, which is a well-established and compelling approach to create software. The proposed solution has been successfully applied in a research project aimed to design and implement a prototype of next-generation automotive telematics systems.
