When surface topography data is composed of regularly distributed orthogonal grid points, significant surface features can be defined from topological theorems. A practical method of identifying four types of surface features such as point, line, areal and local geometric features were proposed being based on triangulation processing over grid type discrete data points. Then a sophisticated algorithm for extraction significant surface features was developed, which are incorporation of areal features or local geometric features. Some exceptional data processing techniques were also presented. It was revealed that the algorithm satisfies the topological principles for continuous surface data. Discussions were extended to effective feature parameters such as peak distribution, lay orientation, areal local undulation and so on.
