A vision for the use of human behavioural patterns in improving ambient assisted living systems

A.G. Mathews, Ernesto Compatangelo · 2009

This paper presents a vision for the use of human behavioural patterns in improving ambient assisted living systems for elderly and disabled people. These patterns provide an abstract representation of various actions and activities (such as walking, reading, sitting). Over time, patterns can be identified which capture and generalise the way such behaviours occur. By using them in ambient assisted living systems, it is possible to infer people's well-being, safety, and comfort in their own homes. Being able to classify behaviours, it is possible to remotely assess how 'safe', 'concerning', or 'dangerous', a scenario actually is and what actions should be performed to address problems if any.
