Deriving structural information from robust phase attributes

Anne H. Schistad Solberg · 2013

We estimate the local 3D structure orientation and use it to derive new robust phase attributes. Several new attributes derived from the phase are introduced. The attributes are: reflector location attribute, mean segment amplitude, mean amplitude of closest segments, mean time signature, inter-segment distance, and within-segment correlation. The proposed phase estimates and the derived attributes are evaluated on two different data set. They show higher robustness and less noise than the traditional 1D instantaneous phase. Furthermore, they identify areas within large directional uncertainty. These correspond well with faults and the inside of a salt structure. The segment attributes are also used in a simple segment classifier. The segment classifier is tested on selected horizons and the results compared to manually interpreted horizons.
