Some Technological Advances in Musical Analysis

In the first of the devices and techniques described here, we consider the problem of recording and notating a piece played upon several percussion instruments. If a tape recording is made of the piece as played in situ, the tape recording of the complex of sounds cannot discriminate sufficiently among the individual instruments so that it will be possible to determine which instrument has been struck at which instant of time.
