Trajectory Reconstruction with a Least Squares Sliding Window (LSSW) Filter

Kevin N. Jackson, Melissa Farbman · AIAA Guidance, Navigation, and Control Conference and Exhibit · 2007

Trajectory reconstruction is essential for verifying the accuracy of missile system simulations. This paper presents an innovative method for performing trajectory reconstruction from flight test data, using a unique application of the least squares approach. The filter design allows variable order in addition to adjustable bandwidth. The filter was tested using a typical TBM (Tactical Ballistic Missile) trajectory. Results show that the filter has excellent noise rejection properties. In addition, the higher order states allow for improved extrapolation capabilities. The filter is very useful in processing noisy data with irregular data rates and drop-outs to produce a smooth output trajectory (including higher order states) at a uniform data rate.
