Thla paper describes the Parallel Inferencing Performa~ce Evaluation and Refinement project (PIPER). a flexible and general purpose parallel inference e..gine for the BBN Butterfly Plusm parallel computer. The PIPER inference engine is based on the Merit Enhanced Traversal Engine METE. The METE algorithm is an extension of Forgy's (1979) RETE algorithm.
