THE PIANO WAS a nineteenth-century music synthesizer. Every genre of music was reproduced on the piano by virtuosi like Liszt. And composers conceived their music at the piano. The piano has eighty-eight keys painted black and white with two or three pedals as the outside operators. Each key has two states: on and off. The pedals work invariably over the whole region. Timbre is neglected. Also, there is no place for local variation of parameters (the fluctuation of a sound after initiation). Consideration of timbre was almost excluded from the musical structure
