Predicting heartbeat arrival for failure detection over Internet using system identification

The failure detection was a fundamental service in distributed system and its accuracy depends on predicting heartbeat message arrival time. However, Internet dynamic characters bring more tough challenge to predict heartbeat arrival, such as competing traffic, routing behavior, available bandwidth and traffic source etc. all will impact predicting heartbeat. In this paper, we first introduced fundamental concepts, then proposal a novel black-box prediction approach using system identification. Simulation showed comparing with existed solutions which just using past output information, our predicting approach can use both past input and output information, make minimum prediction error under different network environment.
