Generalized prisms for improved grid quality

Andrew Cary, Todd R. Michal · 15th AIAA Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference · 2001

A novel method for improving the grid quality of an extruded mesh is presented. This approach is based on the addition of a new cell type and criteria that determine where it should be used. With this technique, the semi-structured extrusion is modified to allow for local singularities in the geometry or grid that result in an overall improvement in the resolution of the flow. The particular difficulties associated with adding new extrusion directions are resolved through spherical geometry considerations of the local grid topology. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional examples are presented.
