Lining Torn Paintings on Aluminum Panel

Carroll Wales · International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works · 1968

I feel that a solid secondary support such as an aluminum panel has two main advantages for backing a torn fabric support. First, it holds the edges at the break firmly in place and prevents them from lifting or separating at a later time. Second, it gives a firmer base for filling and inpainting. A solid backing has other advantages, notably, that it gives good protection against mechanical damage and that it prevents the recurrence of such defects of plane as cupping and draws.
