A Process for Systems of Systems Architecting

The use of architectures for the design, development, and documentation of system-ofsystems engineering has become a common practice in recent years. This practice became mandatory in the defense industry in 2004 when the Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) Promulgation Memo mandated that all Department of Defense (DoD) architectures must be DoDAF compliant. Despite this mandate, there has been significant confusion and a lack of consistency in the creation and the use of the architecture products. Products are typically created as static documents that are difficult to change and do not sufficiently support engineering design activities and decision making. This research proposes and demonstrates a structured process for developing DoDAF products and then using these products as an input to modeling and simulation in support of early-phase acquisition decision making.
