Performance evaluation of intra prediction modes in H.264/AVC

G.P. Kapse, Sanjay Nilkanth Talbar · 2009

The new video coding standard, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, uses an intra prediction mode with 4×4 blocks and 16×16 blocks sizes for luma component and 8×8 blocks size for chroma component. This new feature of H.264/AVC offers a considerably higher improvement in coding efficiency compared to other compression standards. In order to achieve this, a spatial correlation that exists between the neighboring blocks or sub-blocks is considered. However, the computational complexity of H.264 encoder is drastically increased due to the various intra prediction modes. In this paper, the effect of intra prediction mode with 4×4 blocks and 16×16 blocks sizes for luma component on picture quality is evaluated. (4 pages)
