Joint Energy Management and Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks for Space Exploration

Yingyong Chen, Michael Hadjitheodosiou · 2004

Wireless Sensor Networks are potentially powerful tools for NASA’s planetary exploration missions because of their unique capability of being deployed into an unfriendly and unattended environment for autonomous data gathering tasks. In this paper, we discuss the possibility of utilizing wireless sensor networks in NASA’s planetary exploration missions, focusing on the network performance implications. We provide an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of wireless sensor networks in missions of this type. We also discuss some simple sensor management protocols and route selection criteria based on network redundancy information aimed at extending the coverage duration and network lifetime in all necessary regions that are required for mission success.
