Comments on University Instruction in Computer Music Composition

Jacques Arveiller, Hannah Bull, Curtis Roads · Computer Music Journal · 1982

In practice, a composer always refers to other composers of the past and present. The very idea of musical composition is inseparable from the question of its pedagogical transfer, with everything this involves on psychological and institutional levels. This is because only a part of compositional expertise can be submitted in writing in the form of a treatise, manual, or primer. When computers come on the scene, though the fundamental issue remains the same, the didactics of composition exhibit certain distinctive features and have specific problems. Since the computer is going to figure increasingly in musical composition, it seems an auspicious moment to give the details of an experiment in effect since 1970 and indicate some solutions we have tried to find for these problems.
