Wireless Network Systems to Support NASA's Exploration Vision

Kevin K. Gifford, Stephen P. Braham · AIAA Infotech@Aerospace 2007 Conference and Exhibit · 2007

[Abstract] This paper investigates the use of wireless communications necessary for accomplishing NASA’s Exploration Mission goals of returning to the Moon and then to support a manned mission to Mars. Instead of the traditional point-to-point links employed for spacecraft communications in the past decades, these space communications domains are investigated as inherently networked segments that will potentially make use of commercially-derived wireless technologies. The research question that this paper addresses is what standards-based communications protocols and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products can be used to support internal and external communications associated with lunar exploration mission operations.
