Sensor networks are one of the fastest growing technologies. These networks are invaluable in many civil, military & industrial applications for collecting, processing and transmitting wide range of complex environmental data within various wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Cluster based WSN (CWSN) is become popular approach due to the limited energy of battery-powered nodes. The energy dissipation and clustering are the major challenges in the implementation of such systems. Energy needs to be optimized at every stage of system operation for increasing life time of WSN. In this paper, we study the clustering problem in WSN with respect to energy optimization, and propose a novel energy-efficient routing protocol for WSN to prolong network life time along with shortening communication path. One of the design methods to efficiently manage the network energy consumption is partitioning sensor network into clusters in which one node acts as a cluster head to manage the transmissions of other nodes and to communicate with the far base stations. This is a promising approach that needs more research work.
