Elementary particles and high energy phenomena. Progress report, May 1976 to December 1976. [Summaries of research activities at Colorado University]

The data-taking phase of an experiment to measure the flux of neutral particles produced by pion interactions in a heavy target was completed. The preliminary results of this experiment confirm the predictions of scaling from lower energy data. The experimental run of the iron ball experiment at SPEAR was also completed. The analysis of this experiment should provide cogent evidence on the existence of heavy leptons. A search for slower-than-light magnetic monopoles in cosmic rays was initiated at Fermilab. Necessary modifications were made to the roof above Fermilab's 15 foot bubble chamber to permit the entry of such monopoles into Lexan detectors. The theoretical effort continues in the field of strong coupling theories and quark confinement.
