Application of 802.11p Technology in ITS

Jing Zhou, Dianhui Zhang · Logistics · 2009

Incremental traffic pressure has developed in the large and medium-sized cities of China. A powerful and intelligent transportation system, which is of small start-up funding and convenient structure, will help to ease the traffic pressure and improve the quality of urban traffic. With the technology based on 802.11p standard, it is available to transmit data for 1,000 meters at a maximum rate of 54bps. An on-board wireless communications system based on the technology will be able to collect roadside infrastructure information (such as road information) and send them to the terminal of a vehicle which is moving at high speed. The system also can transmit information (such as the vehicle information, location information of accident cars, etc.) between on-board terminals, so that it can implement the functions of pre-safety and pre-information which are necessary to modern traffic. Then combining with the existing GPRS/CDMA systems and GPS effectively, it is feasible to construct a intelligent transportation system, which is of fewer start-up costs, high reliability and real time capability. Because the major functional modules of the system are equipped on the terminal, an intelligent transportation system could be constituted with just a little road infrastructure and a car which is of the system's on-board terminal.
