There are two periods in a man's life when commendation for his professional services is especially welcome; one is while he is young, and wondering whether he will "make the grade"; the other is when he is old, and wondering whether he is slipping. At no earlier period of my life would I have felt so honored as I do now, at 80, by this expression of esteem by the members of my profession. The specification for the award, "distinguished service to chemistry," is so broad as to afford wide latitude in the selection of an award address topic. It would not be inappropriate, since one of my services has been to extend the theory of solutions, for me to cover the subject of Regular Solutions. I could then extol a book with that title written by Hildebrand and Scott and just published, but I leave that to the publisher, with only ...
