The Contours of Acoustic Art

In 1987 the 100-day-long Documenta Festival in Kassel, Germany in 1987 featured a new component entitled Acoustic Radio Art. This polymedia encounter of the plastic arts with acoustic art at one of the world's largest international art expositions would have been completely unimaginable just two decades prior. It signified the integration of acoustic art, traditionally supported by radio, into the contemporary cultural scene. Thousands of visitors took advantage of the opportunity to listen to works of acoustic art independent of their radios. Many encountered acoustic art for the first time.
