Automated Simultaneous Leukocyte Counting and Hemoglobin Determinations Using the Coulter Counter and the AutoAnalyzer

The standard (Model A) Coulter Counter has been automated for counting leukocytes by presenting it with blood specimens processed by a modified Technicon AutoAnalyzer manifold and Sampler II. An interference-free counting chamber allows each sample to be aspirated and counted in duplicate. The results are printed automatically. The overall process is controlled by a solid state electronic device. The samples can be simultaneously analyzed for hemoglobin by a standard automated cyanmethemoglobin method. Cell sedimentation is prevented by simultaneous magnetic stirring of as many as 40 blood samples, without cross-contamination. This device is capable of counting 30 separate specimens per hour after initial priming. The new device costs significantly less than other automated instruments performing similar functions.
