“Knowledge acquisition: collation/indexing/access”

P. Page · 2000

As organisations change to meet the demands of the 21st century, greater pressures are put on staff to broaden their skill base, enabling each person to carry out a wider variety of jobs. When we investigated the barriers to people becoming more multi-tasking, we found that for most there was a single main barrier at the top of their list-they couldn't remember the finer details of how to do complex tasks if they didn't do them regularly. This applied particularly to administrative tasks, but was also a factor in other types of work. Whenever there is a change to business processes, this experience tells us that it is important to provide clear, easily accessible information for staff at all levels, if people are to move easily to the new ways of working and organisations are to achieve the full business benefits. In the emerging e-world, where business change is happening very fast this is even more important. Procedures documented on paper often produce several inches thickness of paper for each process, rendering them unnavigable and unusable. We needed to develop an online solution that wasn't just an electronic copy of the paper based procedures manual. This presentation outlines how the collation and intuitive indexing of complex information, coupled with easy access enables organisations to achieve maximum benefits. from the changes taking place.
