Improved Concept for Database Integration in Operational Simulators: A key to Model Reuse

In recent years the demand for cost reduction in the development of Mission Data Systems and in particular Spacecraft Simulators has led ESOC (European Space Operations Centre) to develop and maintain a software infrastructure layer covering the common functionality required by each mission, for example Ground Station Models, Generic Environment Models and Simulator Common Services. Following the success in the domain of mission control systems, ESA funded several initiatives to improve the simulator development process, for example, the ECSS ETM-10-21 (formerly E-10-13) and Simulator Model Portability Standard (SMP2). The new ECSS E-40-07 standard (based upon SMP2) was designed to allow simulators to be broken down into models that are languageindependent and platform-independent and that can be assembled using different configuration scenarios, e.g. with or without hardware in the loop, using different levels of fidelity for the same subsystem model. It thus enables and facilitates reuse of models through the different phases of a spacecraft development.
