Potential timing shift errors when using the discrete wavelet transform with seismic data processing

An impressive reputation has been established for using the discrete wavelet transform, in its maximally decimated form, as a tool for data compression. However, its application to seismic processing could introduce phase distortions because of the lack of shift invariance. In this paper, we have examined the cause of shift variance in the discrete wavelet transform and the kind of artifacts it can introduce to seismic data. Using numerical modeling and a field data example, we demonstrated that the waveform distortion can result in 1D and a ‘check board’ pattern in 2D. Finally, again through numerical modeling and field data examples we have illustrated that these artifacts are minimized by using the stationary wavelet transform in 1D and complex wavelet transform for 2D respectively.
