An Evolution of Morphological Analysis Applications in Systems Engineering

Hernando Jiménez, Dimitri N. Mavris · 48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition · 2010

Morphological analysis is a simple yet powerful technique that has been incorporated in many different forms within systems engineering and design applications. Its relevance in systems engineering lies in the way that it supports the practical implementation of system decomposition and synthesis, recognized as fundamental systems engineering concepts. Morphological analysis, or elements thereof, can be readily found in quality function deployment, system configuration selection, and technology selection. However, some notable disadvantages in the original formulation of morphological analysis reveal shortcomings in its practice. Recent advances in its implementation, leveraging on new mathematical formulations and software development, have addressed some of these shortcomings and reveal an evolution of this technique across multiple systems engineering applications.
