A key feature of the NPOESS system architecture is the patented mission data collection architecture known as SafetyNet. The centerpiece of SafetyNet is the system of fifteen globally-distributed ground receptors in development. These receptors will collect up to five times as much environmental data approximately four times faster than current United States’ polar-orbiting weather satellites. Once collected, these data will be quickly forwarded to United States weather centrals via global fiber optic network for processing and production of data records for use in environmental prediction models. Key features of the SafetyNet architecture are: low data latency, high data availability, excess downlink bandwidth margin, and a robust, secure global communications network.
