HF Serial-Tone Waveform Design

M. B. Jorgenson, KEMPER W. MORELAND · 1999

The intent of this paper is to provide the reader with an understanding of the findamental aspects of HF serial-tone waveform design. Factors which affect the design of a waveform are discussed. Some factors are regulatory, for example, the availability of bandwidth. Others are a consequence of nature, such as the characteristics of the HF channel. The technology used in the detection of serial-tone signals plays a key role in the design of the waveform. Dach of the component elements of a serial-tone modem is briefly described. Empirical waveform per$ormance rules are presented and the design process is illustrated with an example based on the development of a 9600 bps HF waveform standard.
