In order to increase our understanding of the new generation of layered OSs and transaction monitors, as well as the reason for value-differentiation in the functionality now being projected, it is wise to start with the environment for which the new transaction monitors are designed. This means highlighting the client-server architecture. (See also the discussion on client-servers in connection to networks in Chapter 9 below.)
