Lowpass FIR Filter Design Methods by using Different Window Functions

Suruchi Sharma, Abhishek Lahariya · 2014

- In signal processing, an input signal to a system contains some unnecessary content or additional noise which can degrade the quality of the signal. In such cases, we may use filters to remove that additional noise. So, a fundamental aspect of signal processing is filtering. Digital filters are designed using frequency specifications. For the designing of low pass FIR filter, it requires filter specifications like sampling frequency(f s ), cut off frequency(f c ), pass band frequency, stop band frequency etc. So in this paper, Filter Design Analysis (FDA) tool is used to design low pass FIR filter which is available with MATLAB. We used various types of window function using Blackman, Hamming, Gaussian and Kaiser window and their behavior for different order will be analyzed. Kaiser window is the best window function for FIR filter design. Using this window we can realize that FIR filter is simple and fast.
