The simulation of chaotic advection for application to process engineering

Edward P.L. Roberts · Research Explorer (The University of Manchester) · 1991

Chaotic advection is a regime of fluid motion characterised by rapid mixing. The flow of a newtonian incompressible fluid in a ducted engineering geometry is modelled for Reynolds numbers in the region of 0-500. Using computerised colour graphics chaotic advection and rapid mixing is observed for unsteady flows which are generated by both 'natural' instability and forced oscillation. The increased mixing will result in reduced dispersion and efficient heat and mass transfer, in agreement with recent experimental results on oscillatory flow devices. (A)
