Usage control extends access control by not only governing who may access which data, but also what may or may not happen with the data afterwards. This is relevant for personal data as well as for various types of intellectual property and for data re¬ lated to public security. We studyusage control in the context of distributed Systems with different actors, taking the roles of data providers (who distribute data) and data consumers (who request and reeeive data).Usage control is a rather new researcharea and many problems in this area are not yet solved. In this dissertation, we provide important steps towards a better technical and scientific foundation for usage control.
