This essay discusses the evolution of chatterbots and presents as a case study the process of designing a chatbot, MrMind (1998-2014). the author argues that while writing bot is a uniquely modern, even futuristic, endeavor, the bot author draws on long-standing artistic, theatrical and improvisational traditions.
