Data acquisition for the twenty-first century with a brief look at the Nyquist sampling theorem

Robert W. Shoemaker · Proceedings of the American Power Conference; (United States) · 1992

As we approach the Twenty-First Century, technology is racing forward with new developments to assist engineers in acquiring and analyzing data. To maximize productivity, powerful, high level, and easy to use tools are being developed so that data acquisition system designers and users will be able to produce systems without having to be computer programmers. The intent of this paper is to describe new developments in both hardware and software for personal computer based data acquisition systems. Also described is our approach to what we believe will be the next generation of data acquisition systems. Finally, the Nyquist theorem of data sampling is defined, discussed, and, hopefully, clarified. Examples of the application of the Nyquist theorem and anti-alias filtering are also presented.
