Layer 2 security: in vogue

When talking about network security, the conversation is often limited to the top five layers of the OSI model. What IP addresses should you allow through your firewall? What service runs on TCP port 143? How do you lock down your PHP installation? Layer 2 engineering is something that is generally relegated to the datacenter. This is not the right way to go about it.
