Virtual Private Networks and Secure Remote Access

Justin Opatrny, Carl Ness · 2012

This chapter provides an introduction to different types of virtual private networks (VPNs) and extranets and their uses. VPNs and extranets have many powerful features that can enhance an organizations ability to conduct and improve employee mobility and business functionality. The most common use of a VPN is for secure, client remote access. This allows an authorized user to connect to a VPN and gain access to internal resources from anywhere with an Internet connection, while maintaining the security of the transmission. The chapter highlights that each VPN type has distinct advantages, and each warrants thorough investigation prior to selecting the technology that best fits organizational needs. The chapter also emphasizes that the support and input for VPNs and extranets must come from all levels of the organization to ensure that the secure remote access systems meet the organization's specific needs and expectations. Most important, these systems must adhere to and enhance the organization's overall security profile.
