Earthmovers get dash displays, self-diagnostics

Caterpillar's Electronic Monitoring System is described. The system provides continuous monitoring of several machine functions, with visual indication and/or audible warning, depending on the urgency of any malfunction. Experience to date indicates good acceptance of the concept of on-board diagnostics. Every dealer polled has given strong approval to the system which eliminates the need for an expensive test box. Initial troubleshooting success has been good, up through the stage of identifying which peripheral circuit is at fault. After that stage, some troubleshooting confusion results from lack of basic understanding of multi-meter troubleshooting.
