A real-time digital system often consists of several concatenated signal processing stages. It is well known that the performance of any stage can be improved if its inputs are soft-decisions rather than hard-decisions. Therefore, soft-output algorithms are preferable for the inner stages of such multi-stage system. In this paper, we summarize and analyse the various soft-output algorithms with emphasis on their design criteria, performances, complexities and applications.
