Outlook: The World after Product Line Engineering

Tim Weilkiens, Jesko G. Lamm, Stephan Volkher Roth, Markus Walker · 2015

The authors are convinced that research around product line engineering will provide even more efficient product line approaches than we know today. In this chapter, they draw out a scenario that should start a debate about the advantages and disadvantages of product line engineering. The authors suggest the reader to challenge the current systems architecting approaches like product line engineering and other concepts, and to choose them thoughtfully. It is not known if the research in product line engineering will keep up with the individual needs of different market segments and markets. It is also not known whether there will be a need for individualized mass products in future. But what the authors do believe is that the systems architecting work, whatever it will be like, is going to be one of the key factors for selling better products successfully-hopefully based on model-based systems architecting.
