A System Development Environment for Embedded Custom-computing Machines

Zoran A. Salcic, Ceri Lewis, Louis Ormerod · 1999

In this paper we present a system development environment for embedded applications based on custom-computing machines implemented in Field Programmable Logic Devices (FPLDs). The concept is based on the fact that FPLDs enable convenient way of customisation and reconfiguration of digital systems. The core of the environment is a custom-configurable processor that can be customised by adding new elements into its own data path or external functional units that implement whole algorithms. As such, it supports customisation on both hardware and software level of abstraction. The system development environment also enables its own customisation as new features to the target platform are added.
