Still Image Transmission over a Fading Channel Using ARQ Error Control

Due to the widespread increase of wireless LAN and cellular radio subscribers, the demand for image transmission over a multipath fading channel is increasing rapidly. However, the channel is generally very unreliable and produces burst errors due to the time-varying fading. In this paper, the effect of automatic repeat request (ARQ) error control on the highly data compressed still image transmission is studied. Classifying the compressed image bits into classes of different importance, those bits in the more important class are transmitted with higher priority. Based on the computer simulation, we have confirmed that the proposed scheme achieves higher quality image transmission than the conventional ARQ.
