Statistical Analysis and Simulation Study of Two-layer MPEG Video Coding Algorithm in ATM Networks

Jian Feng, Kwok‐Tung Lo, Hassan Mehrpour · International Symposium on Information Theory and its Applications · 1994

Future Broadband network based on the technique of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) provides variable-rare high speed channels, making variable-rate transmission possible even for real-time video communications. From the point o network design, it is necessary to have a precise grasp of the statistical characteristics of these variable-rate data. In particular, video data, with their high-average bit-rates, will have a large influence on network design. In this paper, a two-layer MPEG video coder is presented for video communications over ATM network. A new classification method is proposed to partition image data into two layers with different priorities. A detailed study on the statistical characteristics of the output bit-stream such as bit-rate distribution and autocorrelation in both bit-level and cell-level is also given in the paper.
