In recent years we have seen literary critics and students of reading make more and frequent use of numbers, cite publishing and library statistics and sociological surveys, and - a matter of fundamental importance - apply not only the traditional methods of literary scholarship, which are descriptive, but also "exact" methods for analysis of phenomena in culture and art.
