Without a doubt, the world of information has been transformed beyond recognition, and there remains an essential truth that the International Development Research Center (IDRC) has always taken to heart in the area of information programming. It recognizes that information, and effective communication of this information, had the potential to be powerful forces in the development process. IDRC has helped create and strengthen information and communication systems, services, networks, technologies, and tools, and the human resources to effectively use them. With 25 years of experience, IDRC now sees the information area as multidimensional, consisting of information, communication, information and communication technologies, and related policy issues. This paper looks at the evolution of the IDRC information program and its impact on different regions of the world. The challenge for IDRC and its partners and colleagues throughout the world will be to help close the information gap between North and South, the information ¿haves¿ and ¿have nots¿, and to work toward a more positive social outcomes from increased use of information and its allied communication technologies.
