Packet Video - a New Mode of Video Information Transfer
PR Crosthwaite, AW Seeto · 1987
Video will become an increasingly important component of new multi-media information applications using telecommunications including international networks. The availability of wide bandwidth and fast access mechanisms in national and international networks of the future should enable long and short segments of video images to be transmitted and switched conveniently. Video transport can be provided efficiently using fast packet communication taking advantage of the inherent business of video information. This paper discusses layer model and design issues in packetising video for real-time applications. It discusses how the current CCITT video conferencing coding standards may be modified to take advantage of the variable bitrate capability of fast packet transport.
